World Whiskeys: Reconstructing the Label (Scenario 1)

Second worked scenario: one bottle says distilled gin, another says London dry. A plausible mistake is expecting both to be dry, juniper-forward spirits. The better decision: by the widely used definition, London dry is redistilled with its botanicals and permits no added sugar after distillation, so expect a prominent juniper character with no sweetness; plain distilled gin can be softer or sweeter, with flavoring choices left to the producer. The category words, not the imagery on the bottle, carry this information. When a label term has a defined meaning, read the definition into the glass before tasting confirms it.

Carry the same base-liquid logic across white spirits. Vodka pursues neutrality through rectification and filtration, so its differences come from base material and filtration choices rather than flavoring. White rum and rhum agricole split on the fermentable — molasses versus fresh sugarcane juice — and that split shows in grassy, vegetative aromatics. Agave categories separate first on raw material and region, then on cooking, fermentation, and distillation choices.
